The 4 GSTIN Status Types Explained
1. Active GSTIN
The business is legally registered under GST and authorized to collect tax and issue tax invoices. Buyers can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) if return filing is up to date.
2. Suspended GSTIN
The tax authority has temporarily frozen the GSTIN due to non-filing of returns or discrepancies. The supplier cannot legally issue tax invoices or collect GST during suspension.
3. Cancelled Suo Moto / Voluntary GSTIN
The GSTIN has been revoked either voluntarily or by tax officers. Accepting invoices dated after cancellation is illegal and leads to ITC disallowance.
4. Provisional / Inactive GSTIN
The GSTIN registration is incomplete or undergoing verification. Transactions with provisional entities should be conducted with extreme caution.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay a supplier whose GSTIN is Suspended?
No. Suppliers with Suspended GSTIN cannot legally issue tax invoices or pass on Input Tax Credit. Payments should be withheld until the GSTIN returns to "Active" status.
What should I do if a supplier's GSTIN gets Cancelled after payment?
If the invoice date falls within a period when the GSTIN was Active, ITC may be claimed provided the supplier filed GSTR-1 for that tax period. Cross-check filing history on the GST portal.
